Sunset Over the Marina

 

I’ve got photo albums that are big and small. Not in terms of how many photos are in them, but more about the purpose behind them and how much effort went into making them. Simply put, the small albums happen on the fly, but the big ones—those take planning and effort.

So, here it is: my first big album in ages!
For once, the sun came out, and I finally did what I’d been meaning to do for a while—I went down to the Sandringham Yacht Club to shoot the sunset and the view towards Melbourne’s city skyline, which isn’t far from there.
I won’t even get started on how much it costs to park there for two hours—grrr!
But it was totally worth it. The view was stunning. The most beautiful moment, sadly, I didn’t manage to catch—dolphins were jumping through the sunset-lit waves. Unbelievable!

Before anyone asks: I don’t know the girls in the photos. They’re just there to add a bit of charm to the scenery, and I took the photos with their permission.

Закат и яхты

У меня бывают фотоальбомы большие и маленькие. Не в смысле количества снимков, а скорее в смысле целенаправленности и количества усилий. Попросту говоря, маленькие альбомы случаются между делом, а вот большие - результат поставленных целей и усилий.

Таки, первый большой альбом за долгое время!

В кои-то веки вышло солнце, и я сделал то, что давно хотел - поехал в Садрингэм на пристань яхт, чтобы снять закат и виды на центр Мельбурна, который недалеко. Я даже не буду жаловаться, сколько там стоит запарковать машину на 2 часа! Гррр!...

 Но дело того стоило. Было красиво. Самое красивое мне снять, увы, не удалось. Дельфины прыгали в закатном море - обалдеть!

Предваряя вопросы: Девушек на снимках я не знаю. Сняты для украшения пейзажа с их позволения. Итак, собственно альбом:

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

A Catholic cathedral in Gothic style. Built properly, just like the medieval cathedrals in Europe, but... in the 19th century. Victoria (back then still a colony, not a state) was insanely rich in the 1800s and didn’t hold back on anything. Want a Gothic cathedral in Melbourne? You got it! Not just one, but cathedrals, and even monasteries. And not just in Melbourne—regional cities like Bendigo and Ballarat have their own impressive cathedrals too.

I’ve had my eye on this cathedral for ages. So, I finally took a stroll around both outside and inside. Of course, with my camera.

Собор Святого Патрика

 Католический собор в готическом стиле. Построен без халтуры, как и средневековые соборы в Европе, но... в 19м веке. Виктория (тогда еще не штат, а колония) была в 19м веке безумно богата и ни в чем себе не отказывала. Хотим готический собор в Мельбурне? Будет готический собор! И не один, и не только соборы, но и монастыри. И не только в Мельбурне. Региональные города Бендиго и Балларат могут похвастаться такими же соборами.

Давно у меня глаз на этом соборе лежал. Ну и... погулял снаружи и внутри. Разумеется, с камерой.

The Avenger with the Sabre

 

I swear, this is the last album with planes! I won’t do it again!

But seriously, this is the final album from an airshow. And the best part? Historic military aircraft in the sky.

First up, the TBM Avenger. This was a US Navy torpedo bomber from the war. Basically, it’s the plane that sank the Japanese fleet. An absolutely impressive machine, and the roar of its engine with 1,900 horsepower is unforgettable!

Next, the F-86 Sabre. This was the hero plane of the Korean War. For many pilots of the MiG-15, the last thing they saw was a Sabre. Sabres destroyed MiGs at a ratio of 10-12 to 1.
To be more accurate, it’s not exactly a Sabre. This is the Australian version. The Aussies fitted it with a more powerful engine and better armament. Officially, it’s called the CAC CA-27 Avon Sabre.

Мститель с Саблей

Чесслово, последний альбом с самолетами! Больше не буду! 

Но и правда, последний альбом с авиашоу. Зато, здесь самый цимес - исторические военные самолеты в воздухе.

Первый - TBM Avenger. Это палубный торпедоносец-бомбардировщик ВМС США времен войны. По сути, это самолет, который утопил японский флот. Очень впечатляющая машина, и рокот двигателя с его 1900 л.с. незабываем!

Второй - F-86 Sabre. Это самолет-герой корейской войны. Вид Сейбра был для очень многих пилотов МиГ-15 последним, что они видели в жизни. Сейбры уничтожали Миги с соотношением 10-12 к 1.

Если быть более точным, то летает не вполне Сейбр. Это австралийский вариант. Австралийцы установили на него более мощный двигатель и вооружение. Официально этот самолет называется CAC CA-27 Avon Sabre.

Sale airshow - The Roulettes

The Roulettes are the aerobatic team of the Royal Australian Air Force. They’re just like the UK's Red Arrows, Italy’s Frecce Tricolori, or the US’s Blue Angels. They fly very modern, advanced training and combat aircraft, the Swiss-made PC-21 Pilatus.

They fly with skill and style.

Авиашоу в Сэйле - The Roulettes

 The Roulettes - это акробатическая группа Королевских ВВС Австралии. Такая же как английская Red Arrows, итальянская Frecce Tricolori или американская Blue Angels. Летают на очень современных учебно-боевых самолетах PC-21 Pilatus швейцарского производства.

Летают умело и красиво.

Sale airshow - the ground display

 

The airshow was small, regional, and absolutely charming. Instead of a bunch of modern fighters and bombers, all five senses of aviation enthusiasts were treated to classic aircraft from the 30s to the 50s. Plus, there was impressive aerobatics with sport planes. For now, here’s the album from the ground, including a classic car exhibition.

Авиашоу в Сэйле - пока на земле

Авиашоу было маленькое, региональное и совершенно очаровательное. Вместо туч современных истребителей и бомберов, все 5 чувств любителей авиации были услаждаемы классическими самолетами 30х - 50х годов. А также впечатляющей аэробатикой на спортивных самолетах. Пока, альбом с земли, включая выставку классических автомобилей.

The Long Jetty and Minnehaha

 

Went on a long and interesting day trip around some pretty cool spots. Kicked off with a little waterfall called Minnehaha Falls (yeah, seriously – Minnehaha!). Really lovely place.

Then, after a quick lunch stop at a Danish restaurant (not pictured), we made our way to Port Welshpool.

The place is known for its super long and bendy pier. Back in the day, it was used for shipping cargo to Tassie. During the war, minesweepers were based there – 'cause the bloody Germans, dodgy bastards, went and dropped mines in the strait between Australia and Tasmania.

Later on, the pier wasn’t really needed anymore, but they fixed it up as a local attraction and turned it into a bit of a fishing paradise. There are rod holders and little shelters for fishos all along it.

Длинный пирс и Миннехаха

Выдалась долгая и интересная поездка на день по всяким интересным местам. Началось с водопадика под названием Миннехаха (не, серьезно - Minnehaha Falls!). Очень милое место. А потом, заехав пообедать в датский ресторан (что на фото не отражено), мы добрались до Порт Уэлшпул. 

Место знаменито очень длинным и кривым пирсом. Раньше он использовался для грузовых перевозок в Тасманию. Во время войны там базировались тральщики, ибо немцы - собаки позорные - накидали мин в пролив между Австралией и Тасманией. Потом пирс стал никому особо не нужен, но его восстановили как достопримечательность и парадиз для рыбаков. По всей длине расположены держалки для удочек и будочки для рыбаков.

Golden Autumn in Daylesford

 

When I posted some autumn photos from the cemetery, it reminded me that a while back (definitely not this year — I wrote this in 2024), I took a great set of autumn shots in some gardens around Daylesford. I had a look through my blog archive but couldn’t find the post. Turns out I never published it! Which is a shame — the photos came out pretty good. So I’m fixing that now and posting them with the actual date they were taken — April 2022 — so you’ll be able to find them in the archives.

Daylesford is a resort town out west of Melbourne, not too far from Mount Macedon (which I visited not long ago). It started back in the mid-1800s during the gold rush, when alluvial gold was found nearby. First came the gold diggers, then farmers and Italian winemakers. The gold didn’t last long, but that’s when people discovered Daylesford’s real treasure.

Hot springs and mineral water. There are dozens of them in the Daylesford area. Loads of spas, bathhouses, and wellness retreats were built around them. Daylesford became a proper spa town, a place Melburnians go to “take the waters.” Some springs even have naturally fizzy water that tastes amazing — as good as anything from Europe. You can just rock up, have a drink, and fill a few bottles to take home. The town’s popularity also comes from its beautiful surroundings — lush gardens, vineyards, and a lovely lake right on the edge of town.

We went to the Lavandula Gardens — yep, they grow lavender there. But beyond the lavender, the gardens are just stunning, with loads of European trees and a really peaceful vibe.

The second album’s from a completely different spot — this time on Melbourne’s eastern side. That trip, I headed out to a forest called Toolangi. I made it to a small, scenic dam — which wasn’t exactly easy. If you don’t have an AWD, don’t even bother. I even had to cross a river the old-fashioned way — straight through it.

The abandoned building in some of the other shots is the Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre. Local environmentalists had this idea to build a super “eco-friendly” wooden building smack in the middle of the forest, to educate the public about nature and how terrible civilisation is. So they built this massive, futuristic timber shed. It was used for a little while, but then the fire brigade came out for an inspection, rolled their eyes, and shut the whole thing down for good because it was a massive fire hazard. And fair enough — it’s sitting right in a forest known for bushfires. If it ever went up, it’d burn like a matchbox. So now it just sits there — locked up and abandoned since 2012, a monument to another one of those half-baked greenie ideas.

Золотая осень в Дэйлсфорде

Когда я выложил осенние фото с кладбища, я припомнил что какое-то время назад (точно не в этом году, а написано это в 2024) я снял очень хорошую серию осенних снимков из садов в окрестностях Дэйлсфорда. Я поискал в архивах блога, но этого поста не нашел. Пропустил, оказывается! А зря, фото тогда получились совсем неплохие. Исправляю упущение и публикую с датой  реальной съемки - Апрель 2022 года, так что найти можно будет в архивах.

Дэйлсфорд (Daylesford) - это курортный городок ка западу от Мельбурна, кстати не так далеко от Mount Macedon, который я посещал не так давно. Дэйлсфорд начал свое существование  в середине 19го века с золотой лихорадкой, потому что в эго окрестностях обнаружили аллювиальное золото. В городе поселились старатели, потом фермеры и итальянские виноделы. Золото скоро кончилось, и вот тогда жители открыли реальную ценность Дэйлсфорда.

Горячие и минеральные источники. Их в окрестностях Дэйлсфорда десятки. На них построены многочисленные курорты, бани, лечебницы и т.п. Дэйлсфорд превратился в spa town, куда мельбурнцы ездят "на воды". Кстати, там есть и источники с вкуснейшей натурально газированной водой, что твои Ессентуки! Подходи да пей и набирай с собой в бутылки. Популярности Дэйлсфорда также поспособствовала красивая местность и многочисленные сады и виноградники в округе. К тому же, городок расположился на берегу очень милого озера.

Мы тогда поехали в сады Лавандула Гарденс, т.е. там разводят лаванду. Лаванда-лавандой, но сады замечательные и с европейскими деревьями.

Второй альбом из совершенно другого места, уже с нашей восточной стороны Мельбурна. В тот раз я поехал в лес под названием Toolangi. Доехал я до маленькой живописной плотины, что было не так просто. Без полноприводной машины там делать вообще нечего, и даже пришлось переезжать речку вброд.

Заброшенное здание на других снимках альбома, это Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre. Местные зеленые экологисты решили, что надо построить ужасно экологическое деревянное здание прямо в лесу, и проводить там просвещение немытых масс про чудеса природы и пагубность цивилизации. И построили этот огромный футуристический деревянный сарай. Он немножко профункционировал, а потом туда приехали пожарные с инспекцией, закатили глаза и запретили эксплуатацию здания как слишком пожароопасного. И правда, здание стоит в лесу, знаменитом лесными пожарами. Если там загорится, оно вспыхнет как спичечный коробок. Вот и стоит оно запертым и заброшенным с 2012 года как памятник очередной идее экологистов с заячьими мозгами.
