Pyramid Rock and the shipwreck remains

As a proud (and slightly cursed) drone owner, I'm constantly battling with the age-old question: where the hell can I actually go for a fly and a few shots?
And let me tell ya, it's no easy task, especially here in Victoria. In our good ol’ police state, it's banned just about bloody everywhere.
On top of the usual no-fly zones near airports and military bases, you’re also not allowed to fly in national parks. And guess what? Anywhere remotely interesting is a national park.
So after a bit of head-scratching, I thought: stuff it — I'll just keep a low profile and hope the rangers are looking the other way.

Off I went to Phillip Island, hitting up a couple of spots I'd been to before.
First stop: Kitty Miller Bay.
Nice enough little bay, but nothing to write home about. The real drawcard is the shipwreck.

Turns out the three-masted steel sailing ship Speke, cruising from Peru to Geelong, smashed into the reefs on February 22, 1906. Everyone made it out alive — well, except for one poor bugger.
What's left of the Speke is the bow and a few bits of steel scattered by the shore. It’s only about a 1.5 km stroll from the carpark.
But me being the lazy sod I am, figured I’d just fly the drone over instead. Genius idea... except I couldn't actually spot the wreck on the drone screen.
So I just filmed the whole area and, turns out, when I got home, the wreck showed up in two shots.
(For the record, I did actually hike out to it back in 2019 and got some proper close-ups.)

Second spot: Pyramid Rock, right at the southern tip of Phillip Island.
Been there a few times too — but never with the drone until now.

At both spots, I went full photography nerd.
Had a polarising filter slapped on the drone to cut glare and let me see through the water, a black ND filter on the main camera for some long exposure magic, and even dragged along the infrared camera for good measure.

Как счастливый дроновладелец, я регулярно мучаюсь вопросом куда поехать полетать и поснимать. Вопрос очень непрост, особенно у нас в Виктории. В нашем полицейском штате это запрещено почти везде. Помимо понятных ограничений рядом с аэродромами и военными базами, летать также запрещено в национальных парках. А  национальные парки везде, где есть что-либо мало-мальски интересное. Думал я куда поехать... и решил плюнуть на эти ограничения и просто не попадаться на глаза лесникам!

Скала Пирамида и обломки кораблекрушения

Поехал я на Филлип Айленд в два интересных места, где я уже конечно бывал. Место первое: Бухта Китти Миллер. Бухта не особо примечательная, хотя и симпатичная. Что там интересно, так это обломки кораблекрушения.

Трехмачтовый стальной парусник Speke, следовавший из Перу в Джилонг, разбился на рифах 22-го февраля 1906 года. Вся команда спаслась, за исключением одного человека.

От Спеке остался нос и несколько стальных панелей у берега. Дойти до обломков не так далеко, около полутора километров от парковки. Однако, ленивый я решил туда не ходить, а полететь дроном. План оказался не сильно удачным, ибо найти эти обломки на экране я не смог. Я просто поснимал все вокруг, и дома уже обнаружил, что на два кадра обломки все же попали! Кстати, еще в 2019 я туда ходил ножками и сфотографировал обломки вблизи.

А второе место, это Pyramid Rock, скала Пирамида на самом южном кусочке Филлип Айленда. Там я тоже неоднократно бывал, но конечно без дрона.

В обоих местах я предался фотоизвращениям. На камеру дрона был надет поляризационный фильтр, который отсекает отражения и позволяет видеть сквозь воду. На объектив моей основной камеры был накручен черный фильтр для съемок с долгой выдержкой. Ну и инфракрасная камера тоже была с собой. Таки вот что вышло:

The beach and yachts

 I’ve shared photos from the Mornington Peninsula a few times before. It’s named after its biggest town, Mornington. And now it’s finally Mornington’s turn to be captured from the air — well, not so much the town itself, but the beach.

The beach is lined with some really picturesque bathing boxes, similar to the more famous ones at Brighton Beach. A couple of years back, I walked around there and took some photos from the ground — and now I’ve got some aerial shots too.

There was also a regatta happening while I was there. Naturally, I wasn’t going to miss that chance, so I sent the drone over to film it. I actually almost lost the drone — got a bit too caught up filming way out from the shore. The wind was pretty strong, and it only just made it back with the last few percent of battery left.

Пляж и яхты

Я неоднократно посылал фото с полуострова Морнингтон. Называется он так по имени самого большого города. Вот дошла очередь и до самого Морнингтона быть заснятым с воздуха. Не столько сам город, как его пляж. На нем стоят очень живописные пляжные кабинки, схожие со своими более знаменитыми собратьями на Брайтон Бич. Пару лет назад я гулял у них и делал снимки. А теперь и с воздуха.

А еще там была регата. Разумеется, я не упустил такую возможность и полетел туда дроном. Кстати, чуть не потерял дрон, увлекшись съемками вдали от берега. Ветер был сильный, и дрон вернулся на последних процентах зарядки аккумулятора.

Lighthouse and ocean coastline

 Last week, my trusty two wheels took me out to Cape Schanck on my favourite Mornington Peninsula. Then my faithful four propellers helped me get a few elevated shots and some video — elevated as in, a view from above.

The spot’s pretty popular, by the way — heaps of people wandering around on weekends.
And it’s definitely not my first time there either.

Маяк и океанский берег

На прошлой неделе мои верные два колеса довезли меня до мыса Cape Schanck на любимом полуострове Морнингтон. А потом мои верные четыре пропеллера позволи сделать несколько возвышенных снимков и видео. Возвышенных, в смысле вид сверху.

Место, кстати, довольно популярное и по выходным там бродит масса народа. Я и сам там далеко не в первый раз.

Jets in flight

Latest album from the airshow. In order of appearance in the album:
C-17A Globemaster III, F/A-18F Super Hornet, F-35A Lightning II, E-7A Wedgetail, KC-30A, P-8A Poseidon, C-130J-30 Hercules.
C-17A from the US Air Force, all others from the RAAF - Royal Australian Air Force. By the way, the RAAF has C-17As too. Not too shabby, eh?

Black Korean eagles

Continuing the report from the Avalon airshow. This album’s all about a ten-minute slot when the Republic of Korea Air Force’s 53rd Demonstration Squadron, the "Black Eagles," put on their aerobatic show. Gotta say, they absolutely smashed it. Flawless performance!

Their plane’s Korean too. They fly the T-50B, a light training and combat jet developed by Korea (with some help from American companies). The combat version, the FA-50, has a beefier engine, American avionics, modern combat electronics, and an Israeli radar. Poland’s bought 48 of them.

Черные корейские орлы

 Продолжаю отчет об авиашоу в Авалоне. Посвящен этот альбом примерно десяти минутам, во время которых выступала пилотажная команда 53й Демонстрационной группы ВВС Республики Корея "Черные Орлы". На "Ура" выступала, надо сказать. Прекрасно отлетали!

И самолет тоже корейский. Они летают на Т-50В, легком учебно-боевом самолете корейской разработки (при участии американских фирм). Боевой вариант FA-50 оснащен более мощным двигателем, американской авионикой и боевой электроникой по современным стандартам, и израильской РЛС. 48 таких машин купила и Польша.

Aerobatics

 

Here’s the next album from the airshow.

Alongside the sporty planes, there’s an MH-60R Sea Hawk anti-submarine chopper in the mix. And the absolute highlight: a Mustang and a Spitfire doing a formation flight together! The best American and British fighter planes from World War II. Fun fact — they both had the same engine, the Merlin.

The last few photos show the Royal Australian Air Force’s Roulettes flying Pilatus PC-21s. I took a lot of such shots at the airshow in Sale, so I didn’t go too hard this time.

Следующий альбом с авиашоу. 

Помимо спортивных самолетов, фигурирует противолодочный вертолет МH-60R Sea Hawk. И безмерная крутизна: Мустанг и Спитфайр выполняют групповой пилотаж! Лучший американский и лучший британский истребители второй мировой войны. Что интересно, на них был установлен один и тот же двигатель - Мерлин.

На последних нескольких фото пилотажная группа Королевских Австралийских ВВС The Roulettes на Пилатусах PC-21. Я их снимал с чувством и расстановкой на авиашоу в Сэйле, так что сейчас особо не напрягался.

Airshow

And it wasn’t just any airshow — it was an international one, and one of the most significant in the world. It’s usually held in Australia every two years, but due to, well, you know what, the last one was four years ago.

It takes place at Avalon, a regional airport about an hour (or less) from Melbourne. This year’s event drew a lot of interest — from the public, the aviation industry, and our partner air forces as well. We had visitors from the US, Japan, Malaysia, and even the Luftwaffe.

This is the first album — the ground display.

 И не просто авиашоу, а международное авиашоу, одно из самых важных в мире. Оно обычно проводится в Австралии раз в 2 года, но из-за сами знаете чего, в последний раз оно было 4 года назад.

Проводится оно в региональном аэропорту Авалон в часе (или меньше) езды от Мельбурна. В этом году мероприятие было очень популярно и у людей и у индустрии. Да и у дружественных Военно-воздушных сил тоже. У нас в гостях были и американцы и японцы и малазийцы и даже Люфтваффе...
