The famous impressionist painter Claude Monet was also a bit of a mad keen gardener. Back in 1893, he bought a block of land with a pond next to his place in Giverny, France. On that land – and especially around the pond – he created a stunning water garden full of lilies. One of the standout features was a little bridge over the pond, which ended up being the focus of 18 of his paintings.
Fast forward about a hundred years, and on the other side of the world in Australia, there was a farming family called the Cochrans. They were growing cabbages and definitely weren’t thinking about Claude Monet. At least not yet. But in the mid-90s, the head of the family, Geoff Cochran, decided cabbages were a bit dull and thought it’d be a top idea to dig out a big pond, stock it with fish, and turn it into a fishing retreat.
And that’s exactly what they did. To give the fish a bit of shade, they planted water lilies and lotus flowers in the pond. Turned out the lilies loved the place, took off like crazy, and made the whole spot look pretty stunning. At some point, someone pointed out that the pond looked an awful lot like Monet’s pond in Giverny. The Cochrans, being switched-on business folk, didn’t ignore that.
In 2006, they officially opened the Blue Lotus Water Garden, where they tried to recreate the look and feel of Monet’s famous pond. They even brought over lily varieties from Giverny – the same ones Monet planted – built a few bridges that looked like the ones in his paintings, and just generally made the place look lovely.
The idea turned out to be a winner. Visitors flock in, especially tourists from China and Japan. People wander around, soak up the view of the lilies and Monet-style bridges, and tuck into some fried lotus root while they’re at it.
I’ve been there a couple of times myself – last time I brought the camera:
