Steel mill

 

Yeah, we’ve got one of those too — Bluescope Steel in Hastings, not far from my place. I ended up going on a tour there, kind of unexpectedly. It was a private tour for friends and family of the staff, but I’ve got a few good mates who work there, so they got me in.

I won’t go into too much detail. In short, they do cold rolling, galvanising, and painting of sheet steel. By the way, the steel’s Aussie-made — it’s smelted in New South Wales.

I sent this photo album to the plant’s management. They really liked it and are thinking about using the photos — maybe commercially or in a presentation.

Сталепрокатный завод

Да, есть у нас и такой. Bluescope Steel в Хастингсе, недалеко от моего дома. И я неожиданно попал туда на экскурсию. Экскурсия была закрытая, для родственников и друзей сотрудников, но у меня как раз есть хорошие знакомые, которые там работают.

Рассказывать особо не буду. Если вкратце, то там холодный прокат, гальванизация и покраска листовой стати. Кстати, сталь австралийская. Ее варят в Новом Южном Уэльсе.

Между прочим, я послал этот альбом в администрацию завода. Им очень понравилось, и они хотят использовать фото то ли коммерчески, то ли на презентации.

The sea and the sun

 

Yeah! I’d almost forgotten what it looked like with all the rainy weather we’ve been having. But it actually happened—warm and sunny! When that kind of weather hits Melbourne, bikers come crawling out into the warmth like cockroaches from under the stove and start living it up.

I’m one of them, so I jumped on the bike and hit the scenic coastal road down to the lovely little town of Portsea. Naturally, I took some photos while I was there.

We also had a total lunar eclipse with a “blood moon” recently. I didn’t put together a whole album, just snapped a couple of shots.

Море и солнце

Да! Я уже забыл как оно выглядит с нашими дождливыми погодами. Однако, оно состоялось. Тепло и солнечно! Когда такое происходит в Мельбурне, байкеры выползают на тепло как тараканы из под печки и начинают наслаждаться жизнью.

Я сам такой, поэтому тоже оседлал коня и поехал по красивой дороге вдоль берега в красивый городок Portsea. Где, разумеется, пофотографировал.

Idyllic views, a waterfall, and a reservoir

A little album from two trips to three different spots.

First stop – the restaurant at Shaws Rd Winery.
It’s set out in a peaceful spot in a middle of nowhere on some rolling hills with cows grazing nearby. You might expect some basic country place, yeah? But nah—it’s actually a pretty classy restaurant, a step up from the usual. You pay for a set menu and choose from a few dishes for the day. And we’re not talking borscht and dumplings—it’s all fancy, well-crafted meals cooked by a top chef. Great spot. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it.

Second stop – Masons Falls.
Big waterfall. Tall and powerful. Only downside is you can’t get right up close. There’s a lookout where you can take it in from a distance, so I snapped a few shots with a long lens—no tripod.

Third stop (next day, solo on the bike) – Maroondah Reservoir.
Not a hydro plant—this one’s a drinking water supply for Melbourne. Really nice area with picnic tables, walking trails, and viewing spots. Oh, and the little waterfall? That’s just water being released from the dam—not a natural one.

Идиллические пейзажи, водопад и водохранилище

 Альбом из двух поездок в три места. 

Место первое - ресторан при винодельне Shaws Rd winery. Что интересно, расположен вполне у черта на куличках на идиллических холмах с мирно пасущимися коровами. Думаете заскорузлый сельский ресторанчик? А вот и нет! Ресторан класса выше среднего, где платишь за комплексный обед, и выбираешь из нескольких пунктов меню на этот день. Только там не борщ и пельмени, а весьма замысловатые деликатесы, приготовленные высококлассным поваром. В общем, хорошее место. Будете в наших краях - не пропустите!

Место второе - Водопад Мэйсона. Большой водопад. Высокий и мощный. Только вот подойти к нему близко нельзя. Можно зайти на обзорную площадку, и полюбоваться издалека. Поэтому фотографировал длинным объективом и без штатива.

Место третье (на следующий день один на мотоцикле) - водохранилище Марунда. Это не ГЭС, а сборник питьевой воды для Мельбурна. Место живописное, со столами для пикников, тропками, обзорными площадками и т.д. Кстати, водопадик там не натуральный. Это слив воды с плотины.

On the Beach and a Market for Ghosts

 

Rain, rain, and yep—more rain pouring down across our state. And then, just for a change, a bit more rain. It’s been going like this for weeks. But to be fair, every now and then the rain takes a breather for a few hours. I managed to catch two of those breaks, used the chance to head out somewhere, and even brought the camera along. Here’s what came out of those little escapes.

First stop – Frankston Beach.
A pretty spot in its own right, but it’s got a bit of history too. Back in 1959, it was one of the filming locations for the Hollywood classic On the Beach starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner—a not-so-cheery film about global nuclear war and the end of humanity. Fun stuff! They even shot the 2000 remake there as well.

Second album – less dramatic, but definitely weirder.
I headed off to the local market with nothing but my infrared camera and a bunch of filters. Then I went a bit wild with it. The results turned out pretty otherworldly—like a glimpse into a parallel universe, or maybe how things might look on the ghostly side of the River Styx.
Or maybe it’s just a photographer mucking about.

На последнем берегу и рынок для призраков

Дожди, дожди и дожди поливают наш штат. А потом еще немножко дождей уже которую неделю подряд. Но надо отдать им должное, иногда они дают передышку на несколько часов. Вот двумя такими передышками я и воспользовался, чтобы куда-то поехать, да еще и камеру с собой прихватить. Тут результаты этих поездок.

Пляж во Фрэнкстоне. Сам по себе довольно милый и живописный, но и с историей. Например, в 1959 году там снимался знаменитый голливудский блокбастер "На последнем берегу" (On the Beach) с Грегори Пеком и Авой Гарднер. "Оптимистический" фильм про глобальную ядерную войну и гибель человечества. Кстати, римейк 2000 года снимали там же.

Второй альбом гораздо менее драматичный, но более странный. Я отправился на местный рынок, прихватив с собой только инфракрасную камеру с разными фильтрами. И уж поизгалялся!! Результаты выглядят довольно потусторонне. Можно пофантазировать, что так бы выглядела жизнь в параллельной вселенной, или у призраков по ту сторону Харона. 

Ну или просто подумать, что фотограф фигней мается.

Infrared Lake and Japanese Wisteria

Not hysteria—wisteria! It’s a lovely flowering vine that climbs fences and walls and makes them look magic when it’s in bloom. Not far from Melbourne, in the town of Yarra Glen, there’s a garden where wisteria grows over special arches, creating a kind of tunnel. When it’s flowering, it looks pretty spectacular. But hey, enough talk—check out the pics:

And here’s an infrared album from a political party meeting. Like any proper party meeting, it took place in a lakeside park with a barbie going. I slipped away a bit early, grabbed my IR camera, and wandered around the lake just before sunset. I had two IR filters—one at 630nm (that’s the one that makes leaves go pink) and another at 720nm (where the leaves come out white). So yeah… here’s how that turned out:

Инфракрасное озеро и японская вистерия

 Не истерия, а именно вистерия - такой интересный цветочек, который карабкается по заборам и стенам и очень их украшает во время цветения. Недалеко от Мельбурна в городке Ярра Глен есть сады, где эта вистерия растет о ползет по специальным аркам, создавая подобие туннеля. Во время цветения, это выглядит довольно феерично. Ну да что я рассказываю, вот картинки:

A инфракрасный альбом с партсобрания. Партсобрание, как и все правильные партсобрания, проходило в парке на берегу озера с барбекью. Сбежав оттуда пораньше, я вооружился ИК камерой и погулял у озера перед закатом. У меня было 2 ИК фильтра - 630 нанометров (это когда листва розовая) и 720 нанометров (листва белая). Ну вот как-то так...

Sneaky Portraits and Cherry Blossoms

 

Actually, the portraits weren’t exactly taken on the sly.
The people weren’t just randoms off the street. I was at a political event, shooting what I’d been asked to cover. And while I was at it, I snapped a few shots of the people too… just sort of happened that way:

It’s spring here, after all, and that’s when cherry trees are meant to bloom. And this one’s not holding back. If you look closely, you can even spot a few bees here and there.

Портреты украдкой и цветы вишни

На самом деле, не совсем украдкой портреты.  Люди были не на улице и не случайные. Я ходил на политическое мероприятие и снимал, что было заказано. А заодно и людей... ну вот так вот получилось:

A cottage near Melbourne

So yeah, another album’s finally come together. Over the weekend I visited a place I’ve known about for ages, but for one reason or another, never actually got around to checking out. My legs never quite took me there, and the wheels didn’t either.

In my defence, it’s on the opposite side of Melbourne from me—and our city’s not exactly small.

The place is called Werribee Park. Its story goes back to the 1840s, when a couple of Scottish brothers, Thomas and Andrew Chirnside (yep, more immigrants!) bought up a bit of land there to run sheep. Business went well, so they bought more land... then more again... ended up with around 320 square kilometres in total.

They built some houses there and moved in with their families. Since they had heaps of sheep, they hired workers and managers to run the show while they handled the big-picture stuff.

By the way, they were pretty decent folks—kind and religious. Paid their workers well, built homes for them, gave them weekends off. They were philanthropists too, gave big to charity. There’s still a suburb and a school in Melbourne named after them—Chirnside.

They had more money than they knew what to do with, so Thomas eventually decided enough with the simple digs—it was time for something flash. So in the 1870s, he went and built himself a proper fancy mansion.

The house was done up Italian-style, 60 rooms, decked out real fancy. Around it they put in gardens, parks, a polo field, a pond with an artificial grotto, all sorts of nice touches. Turned out real classy.

These days, there’s a museum there, a zoo, rose gardens, and a bunch more. That’s where I had a wander with my two cameras—regular and infrared.

Дача рядом с Мельбурном

 Таки, созрел еще один альбом. На выходных я посетил одно место, про которое знал давно, но все как-то ноги туда не доходили, а колеса не доезжали. В оправдание могу сказать, что место это на противоположной от меня стороне Мельбурна, а городок наш немаленький.

Mесто это называется Верриби Парк (Werribee Park). История его началась в 1840x годах, когда эмигранты из Шотландии братья Томас и Эндрю Чирнсайд (понаехало тут в нерезиновую!) прикупили там немножко земли для развода овец. Бизнес пошел хорошо, и они прикупили еще землицы, а потом еще... в сумме около 320 кв. км. Они построили там домики и зажили с семьями. Т.к. овец было много, они наняли работников и менеджеров, чтобы ими руководить. Сами при этом осуществляли общий контроль.

Люди, кстати, они были добрые и религиозные. Работникам платили хорошо, строили для них дома, выходные были нерабочими днями. Они были филантропами и жертвовали большие суммы на благотворительность. В Мельбурне до сих пор есть район и школа, носящие их имя - Chirnside. 

Денег у них куры не клевали, и Томас решил что хватит жить в простом домике, и пора забубенить себе пафосную фазенду. И забубенил в 1870х. Дачка эта построена в итальянском стиле, состоит из 60 комнат и очень богато украшена. Вокруг ее парки, сады, площадка для поло, пруд с искуственным гротом и т.п. Все получилось красиво и шикарно.

Сейчас там музей, зоопарк, сад роз и еще много чего. Вот там я и пошлялся со своими двумя камерами - обычной и инфракрасной.
