I wasn’t part of the kerfuffle, but I was there for it.
So, the band The Brian Jonestown Massacre (or just BJM for short) rolled into town for their Aussie tour. They play psychedelic rock — sort of in the ballpark of The Cure or early Pink Floyd if you squint a bit. The band kicked off in San Francisco in 1990, but these days they mostly hang around Europe. The frontman Anton Newcombe lives in Berlin, the guitarist Ryan’s Icelandic, the keyboardist Emil’s from Norway… the rest? No idea, mate.
Anyway, thanks to a good mate who’s managing them, I got invited to photograph their Melbourne gig. And not just as some random with a camera — they actually introduced me to the band and handed me a laminate pass. Not just any pass — full backstage access, as if I was part of the crew. Couldn’t get more legit. They even let me into the theatre attic. Naturally, I made the most of it.
Met up with the band during the day and went with them to the theatre for soundcheck. Anton was pretty stoked to find out I’m from Estonia — turns out he’s got a soft spot for Northern Europe. Took a bunch of great shots while they were setting up — empty theatre, moody lighting, perfect. By the way, the Forum Theatre is absolutely stunning inside. First time I’d been there.
Then in the evening, I shot the whole gig — from the orchestra pit and both sides of the stage. Don’t even ask how I managed to sneak from one side to the other…
The music itself? Brilliant. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long.
See, Anton’s got a bit of a history with manic episodes. Usually manageable, but booze and drugs don’t exactly help. And he’s a fan of both. Big fan.
Turns out after the soundcheck, he hit the bar and rocked up to the show already half-cut. And he just kept drinking through the set. The songs were broken up with rambling, sweary monologues to the crowd. By about the seventh tune, he started slagging off his manager and bandmates. Then it all went properly sideways — he swung his guitar and clocked Ryan the guitarist right in the face.
Now Ryan’s a massive Icelandic viking of a bloke, and he wasn’t having it. He chased Anton around the stage, tackled him, and started wailing on him.
All of this happened live, in front of a stunned Melbourne crowd, and yep — it’s all on video. Here’s one of the news articles with footage of the whole mess:

I didn’t catch the brawl on camera, by the way. The show got stopped, and after a bit of discussion, the rest of the tour got canned. Anton flew back to Berlin today — straight to the psych ward, from the sounds of it.
Still, it was bloody fascinating to see that world from the inside. And honestly? I came away with nothing but good vibes. The music’s top-notch — and sometimes, that’s worth putting up with the musicians themselves.
Here are the photos I shot — I gave them to the band for free, through their manager and directly. They actually really liked them:
