Water and Gold

Our state of Victoria’s pretty loaded when it comes to natural resources — and first and foremost, we’re talking gold. In fact, back in the day (before 1900, when Victoria was still just a colony and not a proper state), it was gold that really made the place grow and prosper. Mid to late 19th century, we had ourselves a full-blown gold rush — think Alaska, but a bit more civilised.

People were digging the stuff up any way they could — from big mining operations to lone prospectors panning in creeks. Most of the gold was up in the hills, especially in the mountain rivers.

Not far from Melbourne lies a modest little mountain range called the Yarra Ranges. That’s where the Yarra River starts — the same river that winds its way through Melbourne looking all wide and important, like the Aussie cousin of the Klyazma. But at its source, it’s much less impressive. Still, it weaves right through some of the richest gold-bearing ground around.

The old-timey Victorian gold hunters weren’t fools. They caught onto this pretty quick. Rather than splashing around with pans all day, they took a more industrial approach. In spots where the river made big loops and bends, they’d dig tunnels to cut off a section and drain part of the riverbed, giving them easy access to dig around in the exposed bottom. Smart thinking, really.

Anyway, I headed out to one of those spots with my drone in tow.

It’s called the Little Peninsula Tunnel, and it’s tucked away near the charming town of Warburton. There’s another tunnel not far off too — I’ll get to that one eventually, mood permitting. Getting right to the tunnel on foot is a bit of a mission, though I managed a few ground shots. But being the lazy bloke I am, I brought the drone and flew over the tunnel and the half-dried Yarra riverbed. Even dared to dip it down between the trees for some fancier footage.

 Наш штат Виктория очень богат полезными ископаемыми, и в первую очень золотом. Собственно, колония Виктория (до 1900 года она была колонией, а не штатом) росла и богатела именно золотом. В середине - второй половине 19-го века тут была натуральная золотая лихорадка сродни Аляске, только более организованная. Золото добывали всеми возможными способами - от огромных шахт до традиционной промывки золота одиночными старателями. Золото находилось в основном в горах, и особенно горных речках.

Совсем недалеко от Мельбурна расположился небольшой горный кряж Yarra Ranges. Именно там берет начало река Ярра, которая становится в Мельбурне широкой и полноводной, что твоя Клязьма. А вот в истоках она далеко менее впечатляющая. Зато она змеится по самым золотоносным местам.

Викторианские золотоискатели не будь дураками, это быстро осознали. Вместо ковыряния тазиками дна речки, они подошли к вопросу индустриально. Там где речка сильно петляла, некоторые соседние петли были соединены туннелями, чтобы обнажить дно реки и копаться там в свое удовольствие. Вот на одно из таких мест я и поехал с дроном.

Это называется Little Peninsula Tunnel, и находится недалеко от милого городка Уорбертон (Warburton). Недалеко есть еще один туннель. Я до него впоследствии тоже доеду как настроение будет. До самого туннеля пешком добраться сложно, хотя мне удалось сделать несколько снимков с земли. Но ленивый я взял с собой дрон и полетал над туннелем и полупересохшим дном Ярры. Я даже отважился снижаться между деревьев для более эффектной съемки. Результатом явились эти фото:
