A Melbourne Evening

I’ve been meaning to wander through Melbourne’s little backstreets with my camera for ages. And really, what’s stopping me? I head into the city for work anyway! So, over a couple of days, I roamed around Melbourne snapping away at whatever caught my eye.

And… it didn’t go great! Most of the shots turned out pretty average. The only ones I actually liked were taken in the evening — and those are the ones I’m sharing here.

Вечер в Мельбурне

 Давно у меня была задумка походить по маленьким улочкам Мельбурна и пофотографировать. Ну а что мне мешает, на работу все равно ж туда езжу! И вот два дня я упорно бродил по Мельбурну и щелкал все подряд. И получилось плохо! Единственные снимки которые мне понравились, оказались вечерние. Кои здесь и представлены.

Ice and Roses

Haven’t shared an album in a while — but not because I haven’t been shooting. I’ve just been busy doing photo work for the greater good — portraits for a Senate candidate, then some shots of kids at a dance studio, and so on. It’s been interesting, useful, and all done for free (for now!).

Then another frosty morning came around, and I wasn’t going to miss it. This one’s all about macro photography with a flash and some serious magnification. We’re looking at tiny ice crystals, just a few millimetres across.

Лед и розы

 Давно не посылал альбомов, но не потому что их не было. Занимался фотоработой на благо общества - портреты кандидата в сенаторы, потом портреты  детишек в танцевальной студии и т.п. Интересно, полезно и бесплатно (пока).

А тут опять выдалось морозное утро, и я его не пропустил. Макросъемка со вспышкой и очень серьезным увеличением. Рассматриваем ледяные кристаллы, которые размером лишь в несколько миллиметров.

Guns and Casemates

Old, big album. I just realised I never showed anyone this old album, which I shot all the way back in September. What’s interesting is that I took these shots during a sneaky little outing in the middle of lockdown. Back then, we weren’t allowed to go further than 5km from home, or risk a $5000 fine. Well, I drove 90km. Screw the cops and their rules!

I went to Point Nepean — an old coastal defense fortress. It was built in the 19th century after the Crimean War because Britain was worried about the Russian fleet getting too close to their colonies. The forts were built solid — with underground casemates, concrete, and big cannons. Though, by the time World War I came around, they were already outdated.

Still, Point Nepean made history because it fired the first shot of the British Empire in World War I. Yep, that’s right! From there, a six-inch cannon fired to stop a German merchant ship trying to escape Melbourne after war was declared. A lot more history happened there too.

Пушки и казематы

 Старый большой альбом. Я случайно обнаружил, что никому не показывал этот старый альбом, отснятый аж в сентябре. Что интересно, я его отснял на нелегальной вылазке во время карантина. Тогда было нельзя отходить от дома более чем на 5км под угрозой штрафа в $5000. Я уехал на 90км. Пошли эти копы в жопу со своими правилами!

А поехал я на Пойнт Непиан - старую крепость береговой обороны. Она была построена в 19м веке после Крымской войны, т.к. Британия опасалась появления российского флота у своих колоний. Форты были построены основательно - с подземными казематами, бетоном и мощными орудиями. Которые, впрочем, устарели уже к Первой мировой.

Тем не менее, Пойнт Непиан вошел в историю, потому что произвел первый выстрел Британской империи в Первой мировой войне. Да-да! Именно оттуда бабахнула шестидюймовка, чтобы остановить германское торговое судно которое пыталось сбежать из Мельбурна после объявления войны. Помимо этого, там еще много истории произошло.

Night reflections

So, here's another “big” album – meaning, not just a random one. One of my first proper night photo series was from a walk along the southern bank of the Yarra River (Southbank). It’s a well-known, popular spot with fancy shops, restaurants, and the casino. But the best part – the stunning views across the river and all the bridges. Basically, it's one of Melbourne’s most iconic and picture-perfect locations.

I shot there at night back in 2019 and was super proud of the pics at the time. But I looked at them recently and... yikes. Since 2019, I’ve learnt a bit more about photography – and my gear’s improved too. So, I spent ages planning, watching the weather, waiting for the right moment – and finally went back for another proper shoot!

Ночные отражения

 Итак, еще один "большой" альбом. Т.е. неслучайный. Один из моих первых ночных альбомов был с прогулки в городе по южному берегу реки Ярра (Southbank). Место оно знаменитое, популярное, с самыми шикарными магазинами, ресторанами и казино. А самое главное - с роскошными видами на противоположный берег Ярры и мостами. Короче, самое знаменитое и картинно-узнаваемое место Мельбурна.

Я снимал там ночью в 2019, и был ужасно горд своими картинками. Но недавно пересмотрел и вздрогнул... С 2019 я снимать немножко научился, да и техника стала получше. Поэтому я долго-долго собирался, планировал, подгадывал погоду - и таки снова там отстрелялся!

Ice flowers

 

Here’s a sample of a little photo album — totally random, really. Just happened to have the camera on me.

First up, the sunrise. It was so colourful, the inner poet couldn’t resist. I pulled over to the side of the road, hazards on, jumped out and snapped a few pics.

The macro shots are car-related too, funnily enough. It was +2 this morning (yep, winter here), and the car out front was covered in frosty little ice crystals. The poet’s soul kicked in again… as it does 😉

Used a macro lens and lit it up first with red light, then blue. Got this nifty little lamp that does the trick.

Ледяные цветы

A вот образец маленького альбома, т.е. совершенно случайного - просто камера под рукой оказалась.

Сначала рассвет. Он выдался настолько красочным, что не вынесла душа поэта. Я остановил машину на обочине с аварийным сигналом, вылез и сделал несколько снимков.

Макро снимки тоже, как ни странно, автомобильные. Сегодня утром было +2 (да-да, у нас зима), и машина перед домом покрылась кристаллами льда. Душа поэта... как всегда ;).

Макро объектив и подсветка сначала красным светом, потом синим. Есть у меня такой хитрый светильник.

Whales and seals

Here in our state, we’ve got this classic winter activity — whale watching. They hang out along our coast in big numbers during the colder months, then head north for summer. You can spot them from the shore, but it’s way better out on the water. So, they run special little cruises for it.

Yep, I went on one of those cruises — four hours on a big boat cruising around Phillip Island. We saw so many whales, I started to wonder if they were the ones on a cruise… checking us out. Didn’t manage to see a whole whale, mostly just backs and tails. Still, pretty awesome!

And yep, there were loads of seals at Seal Rocks too. Heaps of them. But I already did the seal-watching trip in summer and sent that photo album around back then.

Киты и тюлени

 Есть в нашем штате тако зимнее развлечение, как смотреть на китов. Зимой они тусуются в больших количествах у нашего побережья, а летом отправляются севернее. Китов можно увидеть и с берега, но с воды конечно же лучше. Для этого устраивают специальные мини круизы.

Таки да, я отправился на такой круиз. Четыре часа на большом катере вокруг острова Филлип Айленд. Китов попадалось столько, что я заподозрил что киты тоже в круизе - по наблюдению за людьми. Целого кита увидеть не удалось, все больше спины и хвосты. Но все равно интересно! 

Ну и да, тюлени на Тюленьих Скалах. Их там ну очень много. Однако, на тюленей я уже катался смотреть летом, и тюлений альбом уже рассылал.

Sunset Over the Marina

 

I’ve got photo albums that are big and small. Not in terms of how many photos are in them, but more about the purpose behind them and how much effort went into making them. Simply put, the small albums happen on the fly, but the big ones—those take planning and effort.

So, here it is: my first big album in ages!
For once, the sun came out, and I finally did what I’d been meaning to do for a while—I went down to the Sandringham Yacht Club to shoot the sunset and the view towards Melbourne’s city skyline, which isn’t far from there.
I won’t even get started on how much it costs to park there for two hours—grrr!
But it was totally worth it. The view was stunning. The most beautiful moment, sadly, I didn’t manage to catch—dolphins were jumping through the sunset-lit waves. Unbelievable!

Before anyone asks: I don’t know the girls in the photos. They’re just there to add a bit of charm to the scenery, and I took the photos with their permission.

Закат и яхты

У меня бывают фотоальбомы большие и маленькие. Не в смысле количества снимков, а скорее в смысле целенаправленности и количества усилий. Попросту говоря, маленькие альбомы случаются между делом, а вот большие - результат поставленных целей и усилий.

Таки, первый большой альбом за долгое время!

В кои-то веки вышло солнце, и я сделал то, что давно хотел - поехал в Садрингэм на пристань яхт, чтобы снять закат и виды на центр Мельбурна, который недалеко. Я даже не буду жаловаться, сколько там стоит запарковать машину на 2 часа! Гррр!...

 Но дело того стоило. Было красиво. Самое красивое мне снять, увы, не удалось. Дельфины прыгали в закатном море - обалдеть!

Предваряя вопросы: Девушек на снимках я не знаю. Сняты для украшения пейзажа с их позволения. Итак, собственно альбом:
