Sunset on the Rocky Coast

Haven’t sent any photos in ages — and for good reason: I haven’t taken any! Just couldn’t find the time... but this weekend I finally broke free and shot off to Cairn Beach late in the day.

It’s a spot I know well and really love. I’ve been there plenty of times, taken photos, even shot some video. It’s not your typical swimming beach — it’s all formed from volcanic lava. Big and small boulders everywhere, rocky pools filled with water, and a heavy surf pounding in. Pretty dramatic stuff! The boulders are full of volcanic crystal clusters that catch the sunlight and really sparkle.

It feels like there’s some kind of sick, Jew-hating frenzy going on in Australia right now. In front of the Sydney Opera House, thousands of protestors were chanting “Gas the Jews,” and then hit the streets looking to hunt down Jewish people. The government responded with a lukewarm statement of sympathy toward Israel — but no one’s rushing over there, while more money is being sent to the Palestinians instead. In Melbourne, Palestinian flags are flying in Federation Square. The Jewish Association of Australia is receiving threats of violence.

This isn’t Australia. The vast majority of Aussies stand firmly with Israel. Even most of our Muslim population couldn’t care less. What we’re seeing is a loud, aggressive, and very small minority of extremists kicking up a fuss. And then we’ve got a bunch of far-left scumbags and grubs calling themselves the Greens. They control Melbourne’s city council — they’re the ones who put up those flags. And let’s be honest, the ruling Labor Party isn’t much better lately.

I don’t reckon this mob’s going to survive the next election. People are fed up.

Я давно не посылал никаких фото. На то у меня есть уважительная причина - я ничего не фотографировал. Руки никак не доходили... но вот в эти выходные я сорвался с цепи и поехал на Кэйрн Бич в конце дня.

Место это давно знакомое и любимое. Я там бывал и снимал уже неоднократно, делал и видео. Пляж это не купальный, а сформированный вулканической лавой. Огромные и маленькие булыжники, скальные бассейны заполненные водой, мощный прибой. Очень драматично! А еще, булыжники напичканы друзами кристаллов вулканического происхождения, которые сверкают на солнце.

P.S. Создается впечатление, что в Австралии творится какая-то юдофобская вакханалия. Перед Сиднейской оперой тысячи демонстрантов скандируют: "Евреев в газовую камеру", а потом отправляются на улицы ловить евреев. Правительство принимает очень прохладное заявление о сочувствии Израилю, но ехать туда никто не спешит, зато шлют больше денег палестинцам. На площади Федерации в Мельбурне висят палестинские флаги. Еврейская Ассоциация Австралии получает угрозы расправы.

Это не Австралия. Подавляющее большинство австралийцев абсолютно поддерживает Израиль. Даже нашим мусульманам, собственно, по фигу. Шумит и буянит громкое и очень небольшое меньшинство мусульман. А еще у нас есть группа ультралевых подонков и ублюдков, которая называется Партия Зеленых. Это им принадлежит горсовет Мельбурна, они флаги и вывесили. Да и правящая лейбористская партия недалеко от них ушла.

Мне кажется, следующих выборов эта шобла не переживет.

Macro and the smartphone snaps

Two little albums that came together completely by accident, just alongside everyday life.

The first one’s from a trip to the plant nurseries. I mean, who goes nursery shopping without a camera and a macro lens, right? Definitely not me! So here’s what I snapped while picking out seedlings. Most of these flowers are tiny – you can tell by the shot with the bee.

The second album was even more random. Just some phone shots taken on my way to and from work. But I used the Open Camera app in manual mode and did the editing properly, following all the “rules” of photo science. Here’s how that turned out:

In an act of incredible bravery, an Israeli couple gave their lives protecting their children from Hamas terrorists. They managed to kill seven of the gunmen who had come to their home, but tragically, they did not survive.

Adar and Itay Berdichevsky from Kfar Aza were both officers in the Israeli army and kept weapons in their home. When Hamas terrorists approached, they hid their 10-month-old twins in the mamad (a reinforced security room) and deliberately drew the attackers' attention away from the children. They were able to shoot and kill seven of the terrorists before being killed themselves.

Relatives later found the twins alive. The children survived and are now safe.

Макро и фото телефоном

Два маленьких альбома, получившихся совершенно случайно, параллельно обычной жизни.

На первом, поход по магазинам рассады (nurseries, по-нашему). Ну кто ж идет по магазинам рассады без камеры и макро объектива, верно? Я точно не из таких! Ну вот что нащелкалось в процессе покупки рассады. В большинстве своем, эти цветочки очень маленькие, как заметно по снимку с пчелой.

Второй альбом еще более случаен. Там и вовсе снимки на телефон, сделанные по дороге на работу и обратно. Однако, я использовал апп Open Camera в ручном режиме и редактировал по всем правилам фотонауки. Получилось вот как-то так...

Спасая своих детей от террористов ХАМАС, израильская пара убила 7 боевиков, пришедших к ним домой, но муж и жена погибли сами

Адар и Итай Бердичевские из Кфар-Азы были офицерами израильской армии, и пара хранила оружие у себя дома. Когда террористы ХАМАС приблизились к их дому, они спрятали своих 10-месячных близнецов в маммаде (укрепленном помещении) и решили отвлечь внимание на себя. Им удалось застрелить 7 террористов. К сожалению, пара погибла.
Детей нашли родственники. Они выжили и находятся в безопасности.

Tulip festival

The Tulip Festival’s on again at the Tesselaar flower farm — I wrote about it around six months back. It’s a working flower farm, and flowers are seasonal. Right now, it’s tulip season, so of course it’s all go.

What can I say... loads of tulips. And heaps of people out there soaking up the good vibes — flowers, food, drinks, the whole lot. The tulips are out in the fields, and the food and booze are in little stalls. There’s jazz bands playing, kids getting tractor rides, and just a great, buzzing atmosphere.

Everyone’s out there taking photos in the flowers — especially the Indian and Chinese crowds, they really get into it. I snapped a few portraits of the ones who looked interesting — didn’t do it sneaky either, just walked up and asked if I could take their photo. No one said no.

Фестиваль тюльпанов

Фестиваль тюльпанов проходит на цветочной ферме Тесселаар, я про нее уже писал полгода назад. Ферма разводит цветы, a цветы сезонные. Сейчас сезон тюльпанов, так что сам Б-г велел.

Ну что сказать... целая куча тюльпанов. А еще масса народа, который идет туда получать удовольствие от жизни в виде тюльпанов, разнообразной еды и выпивки. Тюльпаны на полях, а еда и выпивка в киосках. Ансамбли играют джаз, детишек катают на тракторе и жизнь бьет ключом.

Народ идет туда фотографироваться на фоне цветов. Особенно это любят индусы и китайцы. Я их тоже поснимал, тех кто выглядит поинтереснее. Причем, не скрытой камерой, а подходил и спрашивал, можно ли их сфотографировать. Никто не отказался.

Long Exposure and Invisible Light

Haven’t gone anywhere special, just took photos of whatever was around. Ended up with Flinders Street Station and the trams on Melbourne’s Swanston Street again. But there’s a catch…

I’ve had an ND1000 filter for my lens sitting around for ages—it reduces light by a thousand times (in theory). Rarely used it, but this time I decided to take it into the city and see what I could do. The idea is, since it blocks so much light, you can leave the shutter open for a long time. With a really long exposure, moving things—like people—tend to disappear from the shot. It’s a way to get empty-looking photos. So, I gave it a go.

It didn’t quite work out that way. With lots of people and trams around, they didn’t vanish—they sort of blended together in the images. Still looked interesting, though. Exposures were between one and four minutes: https://www.flickr.com/gp/147740420@N06/2365543FE3

Spring’s finally here, it’s warmed up, and it’s nice to ride my motorbike again. Yesterday, I went for a ride to Korumburra, to the Coal Creek museum—that old-town replica. I’ve been there plenty of times, but this was my first visit with an infrared camera. Here’s what I got:

Долгая выдержка и невидимый свет

Никуда не ездил, фотографировал что под руку попадалось. А под руку мне попался опять вокзал Флиндерс Стрит и трамваи на центральной улице Мельбурна, Сванстон Стрит. Однако, есть нюанс...

У меня долго валялся купленный когда-то черный фильтр на объектив ND1000, т.е. уменьшающий уровень света в 1000 раз (теоретически). Я им пользовался очень редко. А тут я решил взять его с собой в город и посмотреть что получится. Идея в том, что раз света проходит мало, то затвор можно держать открытым долго. А если выдержка очень долгая, то движущиеся объекты (например люди) из кадра исчезают. Т.е. это способ делать безлюдные снимки. Вот я и отправился это проверить.

Получилось не совсем так. Т.к. народу и трамваев была масса, они со снимков не исчезли, а скорее наложились друг на дружку. Но получилось все равно интересно. Выдержка от минуты до четырех минут: https://www.flickr.com/gp/147740420@N06/2365543FE3

У нас таки наступила весна, стало тепло и, как результат, стало приятно ездить на мотоцикле. Вот я и поехал вчера покататься. Заехал в городок Корумбарра, в музей Coal Creek - симулированный старый город. Я бывал там уже миллион раз, но с инфракрасной камерой - в первый! Вот что получилось:

Underwater Cave and Tram — Mount Gambier, Album Three

There’s a cave in Mount Gambier called Engelbrecht Cave. Engelbrecht was the bloke who lived right above it — and yep, the cave’s smack bang under the town itself. Wasn’t a coincidence he lived there, and funnily enough, his last name wasn’t random either.

Turns out, Engelbrecht was German. No big surprise there — South Australia was a real hotspot for German immigrants back in the day. Even now, you’ll find proper old-school German villages around the place.

But Engelbrecht wasn’t just any old German — he was a hardworking, practical kind of fella, proper handy. Made a living setting up a whiskey distillery. Good gig too, everyone loves a drop. Only problem is, making whiskey leaves you with a bunch of liquid waste you gotta get rid of somehow. So our mate set up his still not far from the town tip.

Yep — right by that cave! See, back in the 1800s, the Mount Gambier council reckoned all the sinkholes and caves around were perfect spots to chuck rubbish into. So they spent the next 40–50 years filling them up with all sorts of junk.

And there’s heaps of caves down there. These days they reckon there’s at least 40 caves under the town, and heaps of them still haven’t been properly explored. Most of ‘em are flooded with underground water. Only a couple have a dry entrance where divers can gear up and head underwater. One of those dry caves? Right under Engelbrecht’s whiskey setup.

While Engelbrecht was still kicking, he kept pouring his waste down there — and for a bit of extra cash, he even let local butchers toss cow bones and other crap into the cave too. But when he carked it in 1914, the council didn’t renew the rubbish-dumping licence.

Eventually they cleaned all the junk out and fixed the cave up for tourists and divers. You can even see the water entrance in the pics. Fun fact — the diver in the photo’s a fake — just a mannequin hanging from the roof!

As for the tram, that was over in Portland — a port town just across the border in Victoria. I stopped in on the way home. Portland’s a decent-sized, pretty old town. Was actually in the running to be the state capital once, but Melbourne ended up getting the nod.

The local tram’s purely for the tourists these days. They built the line to run along the waterfront, and the tram itself was put together in the 2000s with a Nissan engine under the hood. Still, was a bit of fun!

Подводная пещера и трамвай - Маунт Гамбиер, альбом третий

Пещера в Маунт Гамбиер называется Engelbrecht Cave. Энгельбрехт - это был чувак, который жил над самой пещерой, которая кстати, расположена прямо под городом. Жил он там не случайно и фамилия у него тоже была неслучайная.

Понятно, Энгельбрехт был немцем. Ничего удивительного в этом нет, т.к. штат Южная Австралия был излюбленным местом для иммигрантов из Германии. Там до сих пор есть этнические немецкие деревни. 

Энгельбрехт был не просто немцем, а немцем хозяйственным, работящим и очень практичным. Жил он тем, что наладил производство виски. Товар, как понимаете, очень ходовой. При производстве виски образуются жидкие отходы, которые надо куда-то сливать. Поэтому, наш немец поставил свою вискoварилку недалеко от городской свалки.

Да-да, той самой пещеры! В 19м веке горсовет Маунт Гамбьер решил, что их сам бог благословил многочисленными дырками в земле, куда так удобно бросать мусор. Вот они и набивали пещеры мусором на протяжении 40 - 50 лет.

А пещер там много. По современным прикидкам, под городом пролегает не менее 40 пещер, многие из которых еще не разведаны. И большинство затоплены подземными водами. Как оказалось, лишь в пару пещер есть сухой вход (и место, откуда дайверы могут отправиться на разведку подводных пещер. Одна из таких сухих пещер была как раз под самогонным аппаратом Энгельбрехта. 

Пока он был жив, он продолжал сливать туда отходы. Да еще и позволял за плату местным мясникам скидывать туда кости коров и тому подобное. Но когда он умер в 1914, горсовет лицензию на сброс мусора не продлил.

Короче, мусор оттуда постепенно выгребли и оборудовали пещеру для туристов и дайверов. На снимках виден вход в воду. Кстати, дайвер на фото фальшивый - это манекен под потолком.

А трамвай был уже в Портланде - портовом городке уже в Виктории. Я там был по дороге домой. Портланд достаточно крупный и старый город. В свое время, рассматривался как возможная столица штата. Однако, выбрали Мельбурн.

Местный трамвай работает исключительно для туристов. И линия проложена специально вдоль берега, да и трамвай сам построен в 2000х с двигателем от Ниссана. Тем не менее, было забавно!

Crater Lakes and Centenary Tower — Second Album from Mount Gambier

 I’ve already mentioned the beautiful volcanic lakes, but hadn’t shown them yet. They’re called Blue Lake and Valley Lake. They’re super close to each other — just a few hundred metres apart. And yeah, they’re properly deep. Blue Lake goes down to about 77 metres. And it really is blue! Depends on the weather, of course, but the locals reckon in summer it turns a really bright blue.

There are parks, playgrounds, resorts and that sort of thing all around and between the lakes. It’s a pretty touristy spot. People head out there to wander around the lakes and check out the caves (I’ll get to those in the next album). I flew the drone around and snapped some photos and videos too. Sadly, I couldn’t get a perfect top-down shot of both lakes — I didn’t want to fly too high ‘cause there’s an airport nearby.

The Centenary Tower was built on top of Mount Gambier. They started it in 1900 and opened it in 1904. It was built as a monument to mark the discovery of Mount Gambier in 1800 — exactly 100 years earlier.

By the way, the mountain (and later the town next to it) got its name from Royal Navy Lieutenant James Grant, who named it after Admiral Gambier, his boss. It’s a classic old British tradition — naming towns and landmarks after your favourite bigwigs, lords, kings, queens and so on. That’s how places like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and a bunch of others got their names. Mountains don’t care what they’re called, but sucking up to the boss never hurts!

Кратерные озера и Башня Века - второй альбом из Маунт Гамбиер

Я уже упоминал красивые озера вулканического происхождения, но еще не показывал. Озера называются Голубое (Blue Lake) и Долинное (Valley Lake). Они очень близко, буквально в нескольких сотнях метров. Озера реально глубокие. Глубина Голубого до 77 метров. Кстати, оно действительно голубое! Это зависит от погоды, конечно. Как говорят местные, летом онo становится вообще ярко-голубым.

Вокруг и между озер созданы парки, игровые площадки, курорты и тому подобное. Место достаточно туристическое. Люди туда едут как раз погулять между озерами и полазить по пещерам (о которых речь пойдет в следующем альбоме). Я полетал и поснимал дроном, сделал так же и видео. Увы хорошего вида на оба озера сверху не получилось, т.к. я не отважился летать слишком высоко - там аэропорт рядом. 

Башня Века (Centenary Tower) построена на вершине горы Гамбиер. Заложена в 1900 году и открыта в 1904. Башня построена как монумент в честь открытия горы Гамбиер 1800 году, ровно за 100 лет до того. 

Кстати, гора (а потом и город рядом) была названа лейтенантом Королевского Флота Джеймсом Грантом в честь командующего флотом адмирала Гамбиера. Это вообще старинная британская традиция - называть города и географические объекты именами любимых начальников, лордов, королей, королев и т.д. Именно так появились города Мельбурн, Сидней, Брисбен, Аделаида и много других. Горе все равно как называться, а прогнуться перед начальством всегда полезно!

Possums in the Sinkhole — Mount Gambier, Album One

I had a week off work, and as usual, I couldn’t sit still. Took a random stab at the map and boom — next thing you know, I’m in South Australia, in the town of Mount Gambier.

Mount Gambier’s mostly famous for its crazy geology. The town’s sitting right on top of an extinct volcano with a bunch of craters. Over time, the craters filled up and turned into these stunning, super deep lakes. On top of that, the place is full of limestone caves. Seriously, the ground under the town’s like Swiss cheese — full of holes. And they haven’t even explored all the caves yet.

Some of the caves closer to the surface had their roofs cave in, creating big sinkholes. The biggest one — Umpherston Sinkhole — was turned into a garden back in the late 1800s. And there are possums living there too — cute little nocturnal critters. They’re pretty friendly, happy to take food right out of your hand. People usually feed them bits of fruit.

Поссумы в провале. Маунт Гамбиер, альбом первый

 Случился у меня недельный отпуск, и как всегда, на месте мне не сидится. Ткнул пальцем наугад в карту и вот - я уже в штате Южная Австралия, в городе Маунт Гамбиер.  

Маунт Гамбиер знаменит прежде всего необычной геологией. Город сидит на плечах потухшего вулкана с несколькими кратерами. Кратеры превратились в озера необычайной глубины и красоты. Помимо этого, там масса карстовых пещер. Реально, земля под городом вся в дырках как швейцарский сыр. Все пещеры даже еще не разведаны.

В нескольких пещерах поближе к поверхности обрушился потолок и образовались провалы - sinkholes. В самом большом из них - Umpherston sinkhole в конце 19 го века устроили сад. А еще там живут поссумы - забавные ночные зверьки. Они не боятся людей и берут еду из рук. Кормят их фруктами.
