And all of this is in Launceston, Tasmania.
We spent the next day there. Our hotel, Penny Royal, turned out to be part of a kids' theme park built on the site of an old quarry. The theme? Pirates — tall ships, cannons, hidden treasure, fake waterfalls, the whole lot. It looked great, but the actual hotel room was pretty average. Still, I forgave it all thanks to the nighttime lighting! I couldn’t resist taking a few night shots, even in the rain.
The main attraction in Launceston is the park built around Cataract Gorge. The landscape there is dramatic and really beautiful. The park itself was a serious bit of work — paths carved into the cliffs, suspension bridges, a swimming pool, a chairlift.
Now get this — it was all built… back in the 1890s! Honestly, how can you not admire the Brits? In the middle of nowhere, in what used to be called Van Diemen’s Land, in a small town that wasn’t even the colony’s capital, they managed to build this stunning park in just eight years. A park so impressive that the British king himself visited. And in 1898, they had vending machines there — selling chocolate and spritzing ladies’ handkerchiefs with lavender water. All for a penny.
To this day, the park’s still dramatic and charming, with old-school flower beds and gazebos. Oh — and it’s completely overrun with peacocks. Which, to be honest, doesn’t do wonders for the soundscape.
